From the catalog of the exhibition "You and Naked Men", P8 Gallery.
Sagi- Your art is political by definition, your agenda is very formulated and I think that more than you want to look at naked men and paint them, you are in fact recruited to feminism and to the act of role reversal- instead of a male painter and a female nude model, as commonly depicted in art history, we find a woman painter and a male nude model. I believe this is what drives you more than the erotic element of a painting of this kind.
Ora- I think that if there's a case where one can say that the individual embodies the political, it is mine. I can not differentiate where my private interest ends and my political interest begins. Where does a political interest originate from? Your personal feelings, whatever drives you, offends you or excites you and so naturally you enlist yourself to the agenda. In my case the two poles unite: politics on the one hand and my private life on the other, one hundred percent equally divided.
Yet I disagree with the statement that I was first motivated by role reversal. I came to art as an innocent, I was not aware of it at all. I did have a feminist awareness, because of which, I was totally oblivious of the power struggle that exists between men and women in the art scene or of the way it manifests in nudity. I was sure that nude male painting by women artists exist, it had not occurred to me that it was so rare. With time I studied the subject and grew to understand the historical progression which made it almost impossible.
Male artist painted women as an act of eroticism. From a feminist point of view, the imbalance between the sexes is problematic, yet I choose not to focus on it at this point, I just want to state that I acknowledge it. I would very much like to concentrate on my identification with the erotic act. While emphasizing my astonishment- how is it that I am the only one? Do other women not experience eroticism towards the other sex? Do they not feel the need to express it in their art?
My feminism does not say - No to artists who paint naked women.
My feminism says- Women, stop hiding the eroticism you feel towards your naked men.
My feminism seeks to know- If women don't feel eroticised by looking at their naked men, what does turn them on? Their car, their watch, the position they are wearing?
My feminism asks- where in art can I see this simple occurrence- a women's sexual attraction to a man? Is a woman's sexual attraction to a man so rare that it can not be found in art? All the more so, if it is such a trivial and common issue! Every topic on earth, from the trivial to the extraordinary, has received an expression in art, so where is this passion?
Sagi- You can not deny the fact that the lack of female expression of the male nude in art history is not the result of women's lack of interest in naked men, but due to the undermining of their status in the cultural- artistic arena, by the same male artists. Women were barred from the art academies and even when they were gradually accepted, they were prohibited as women to be exposed to the male nude, because it was perceived as corruptive to their feminine virtue which they were obliged to fulfil. Clearly women's desires towards men existed, however they could not express them in their art. I now understand that your painting does not derive from an inter-artistically feminist's standpoint, but to a much greater degree from your own personal perspective. How did you begin? How did you first begin to address the male nude?
Ora- During my studies at the "Midrasha" School of Art in Beit Berl, I brought to Orit Adar Bechar's class, a sketch of a nude man I had made from a photograph. She immediately said, and for that I owe her a great deal, "There aren't any male nudes made by women, carry on". I was very surprised. That was the beginning of a long journey, looking for material through the internet, the library and my teachers. Eventually I understood that I know more about the subject than many others do. I read about the male nude from pre-historic times up to the feminists of the nineteen seventies.
Sagi- Silvia Sleigh.
Ora- Primarily, but today there are also Dana Schutz and Louise Bourgeois, who I read in an article is embarrassed with dealing with it, even her…And a few others who touched the subject briefly, but not as a main theme. And so, what initially emerged from personal feelings was, as it happened to be, a pioneering premise with a space to fill. I began to cultivate an ambition to understand women's sexual relation to men, the relation that lies beneath the norms and a curiosity to find if my norms or perhaps my nature are different.
Sagi- You found your calling.
Ora- I was given legitimization to investigate a fascinating subject. Women are often embarrassed by male nudity and are uncomfortable to look at it; this is common knowledge and accepted as the "right way", as proper behavior. Painting and displaying naked men might develop the discourse to some extent and overturn the standpoint. I am looking forward to watching the responses to it.
Sagi- Perhaps you dared to deal with such a sensitive issue because you arrived as a late bloomer for your art studies. Assuming you were not going to be a star artist with a meteoric career, commercial considerations and acceptance in the artistic community didn't interest you as much? After all, your work is not easy to swallow even in the Israeli art society and few people would hang a portrait of naked man in there living room.
Ora- First of all, I dare. And as a matter of fact did think about the art world's acceptance, because I knew I was going to do something that has not been done before and that it made me unique. Commercial value is not as important to me as the option of creating something truly interesting and engaging.
Sagi- When did your work become more focused on the subject?
Ora- Men I knew began approaching me, among them the husband of a friend mine. I did not want to paint merely my man, it is restricting, there is more interest in painting other men. After I uploaded the work to my website, strange men began approaching me to paint them. As more men approached me, my curiosity grew and deepened for this creature, "man". What is a man, what drives him, how does he conduct himself.
Sagi- What were your first encounters with the models like? It's like a blind date, were you not afraid their intentions were more sexual than yours?
Ora- Of course I thought they were, but what was there to be afraid of?
Sagi- You are meeting people you do not know, they undress in front of you, you are alone in the room with them, they might have another reason for being there other than an appreciation for your art.
Ora- They certainly do not come for the art.
Sagi - So they might come from being horny, wanting to seduce you and they might force themselves on you.
Ora - You say something everyone is saying to me in that context. This infuriates me because it is a harsh expression that is part of a woman's upbringing from an early age. There is a preconception that if a man is alone with a woman, the woman is in danger. It is a notion that sees the man as dangerous to a woman and his intentions as always sexual. Specifying to the matter at hand, the assumption is that the man that came to undress for me wants to realize his nudity in sex, even if he needs to physically assault me to achieve it.
Sagi- It is not a preconception but a question of the acknowledged power ratio between men and women. There is a majority of male assaults on women, not the opposite. When a naked man is alone with a woman, there is a possibility he will want to pursue his passion for her, even if it has to come to violence. It doesn't necessarily have to happen, however it is a possibility.
Ora- I simply do not think these are things that can actually happen, I am not afraid. When the first man arrived and everyone asked me the same questions, a friend came to be with me and the model, but it was more for my friend's concern than my own. I was not threatened by people. I was not afraid and still am not, because somehow I have a feeling that dangerous people would not come to an art studio.
Sagi- Not necessarily dangerous, he might just be a plain horny guy that has a thing for you and could suddenly become aggressive.
Ora- That can also happen with no connection to art and I know how to stop it, women deal with it throughout their whole lives. Here also lies an assumption that lust creates aggression towards the woman. This generalization saddens me. I believe that although there are aggressive men, in the same way that there are murderers and thieves, it does not mean you should put your life on hold. I do not have to fear, I am not the sort that frightens either. In any case, I have taken some safety precautions, just to avoid obnoxious people. There was one man who told me straight ahead that he has "thing for older women", so I did not invite him to begin with.
Sagi- If they do not come for the art, why do they come?
Ora- This questions marks the change and development of my interest. My erotic feelings for my man were my starting point. On the other hand, the men that came to undress for me- for reasons other than art- raised a question about their reasons to expose their naked body.
I asked them and they gave me a variety of answers, in the end I understood it does not matter what they say, they just enjoy undressing in front of strangers, the act of exposure, especially to women. I suppose we all have the need for it, some do it on the beach, some find a safe setting for it. I see exposure as a human need, for women as well. After all, not every woman who strips or exposes herself is an abused victim. All nudity is charged with sexuality and so, every session has an air of sex hovering over it. All the men that came to me, would not have gone to a male artist to paint them. The sexual taboo is latent in every session and in every painting. What other motive do you think they have?
Sagi- It could be a case of double standards- on the one hand they have an evident self-assurance, standing naked in front of a woman- painter while she illustrates their body. On the other hand, it might be their need for assurance. Maybe they do not feel desired enough, or did not get enough attention, so they want to be looked at. Take for example, the phenomenon of celebrities and reality television shows, people want to become famous so that they will be looked at. If others want to look at you, it increases your social value and consequently, your self value.
Ora- I agree.
Sagi- Actually, you photograph them, you do not paint them while they are posing in the nude for you..
Ora- Right, I can not leave models in a static pose for long, using photography I get physical and facial expressions that are lost in long poses. Now, after many of my photographs were erased, I began inventing as well. I told myself that I have to go on from here and start working differently. For example, in this painting, of the tiger-man, I positioned him in this way and that way, when I suddenly noticed he was flying, so I decided he was both flying and a tiger.
Sagi- Does the tiger have anything to do with the man's character?
Ora- Definitely, the tiger relates to the character of a few particular men. First of all it relates to sex. A panther, tiger or an animal. It suited the man and the general atmosphere I wanted to charge with in a few paintings, a talk about sex. People always say they talk about sex, what do they actually say? I say I am in favor of sex, in favor of the tigers.
