As if I were entering the exhibition for the first time, with a fresh gaze — trying to understand what has taken shape here.
In the entrance space, only an animated film is projected — a slender and quick pencil drawing — and we hear the artist's voice: simple, everyday, direct speech. Already, from the entrance, I can see a life-sized papier-mâché sculpture lying on the floor of the main hall — a human figure with drooping wings — an angel?
My ears are flooded with loud voices, of the kind one hears on the street or bursting from the television during Knesset debates, for example.
In the animated film, Ora lays out the possibilities the iPad offers for drawing, from which she chose a pencil-like sketching style. As she doodles rapidly, she speaks — like in a children's fairy tale. Her tale strips art and storytelling of their artifice from every side, as she lays open her toolbox. Ora recalls her father as a reference, and cites texts such as Bialik's poetry, Proverbs, the Talmud — and, from the modern realm of images, Google and the Internet. All these serve as her companions as she navigates existential, human dilemmas, allowing her to drift among them.
She quotes from Proverbs: "Three things are too wondrous for me, four I do not understand," and simplifies: "This is a story about the things we cannot understand." In her legend, she needs a princess and an angel to overcome evil, after realizing that she stands before evil embodied as a lion. Evil prevails, and she declares: "Angel, angel falls!" — both within the film and in the inner gallery space. "He cannot withstand these hardships," she adds.
By the video piece, I notice one of the gallery visitors groping her way blindly, her face oddly covered by 3D glasses — the only way to experience virtual reality. She stretches out a hand or leg, turns her head up or down, seeking a safe space. In truth, she is now floating entirely inside Ora's painting — perhaps even within her mind. The three-dimensional world the artist created with her special brush is violent, like the one painted on the gallery wall, yet charged with magic and wonder. The visitor, unknowingly, has become a performer — wandering through a boundaryless, ambiguous world, built throughout the exhibition.
In the gallery's inner chamber stands the Golem — who seems to have gone beyond his intended role and risen up against his creator with aggressive fervor. The Golem's coarse words — some completed by the artist herself — could easily have been recorded anywhere in Israel: at the market, on the road. Yet she chose to place these words in the mouth of a professional actor. The Golem finds support in painting; we, the spectators, are invited to grant him renewed redemption by adding to the curls of his hair a line from Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Creation).
Through words and art, then, we are invited to take part in "creation" — perhaps awakening the good and letting it lead. To this end, pillars of culture and a multitude of artistic strategies join forces in an intense, ironic dance — one that may yet give rise to a triumphant kind of magic.
The Jewish tradition tells of the Golem made of clay, upon whose forehead the Maharal of Prague engraved magical words to give him life and power to save the Jews from blood libels. The Golem later turned against his creator, and words were again required to bring about his death.
Sefer Yetzirah — an ancient mystical book from the second century, attributed either to Abraham our patriarch or Rabbi Akiva. The book asserts, much like the Zohar, that the world was created through letters, and that one who knows the mysteries of language can, through them, intervene in the foundations of creation.
