Cinema Ora

Oz Zloof

Ora Ruven is a central figure in each of the works that make up the Cinema Ora trilogy.

Her presence dismantles any pathos that might attach to thoughts of "the end." Her presence—nonchalant and direct in every video—dispels possible fears or a veil of existential dread that mediates between us and life's great missed chances, unattainable goals, what we did not manage in time. All of these are demons that find a place in the works as ideas or as real figures with whom she dances in DJ Mr. Death.

There is a driving force of desire in this trilogy—a desire to be something, a desire to experience. She learned AI animation as a creative tool, and without wasting time envisioned for herself the retrospective exhibition at the Israel Museum; this mischievous exhibition in her private studio is almost its photographic negative. The Israel Museum piece on the billboards she invented, and the honor voiced by curator Galia Bar Or in the dubbing, measure an artist's distance from unequivocal achievement—national at the very least—from the studio, from the mind, from aspirations, from concrete biography. She invites people of art of every kind to hold that distance and recognize it, at its tangible edge, which includes a person who dreams and tries.

The party with the inner and imagined demons of DJ Mr. Death is already a psychedelic fantasy that takes knowledge of death and hurls the element of fear out the window. From the stuff of fear she builds choreography, colorful types, and spoken song that join a grotesque, erotic, wild unfolding of the presence of life in the concrete contemporary embodiment of the artist. The central space for the party is her living room, and a full physical scan of her places her at the heart of the dance floor.

The monologue that closes the trilogy is a gesture of social disdain toward another old woman who would choose to grumble about missed chances, about the end. Ruven presents there a modest manifesto in the form of a reply to the other, mockery of the basic feeling of missed chance under the title Weeper. She hurls the clear, inarguable terms of life and asks the imagined other to accept them, as one who rejects every stance of bitterness.

She voids the existential meaning of her own creative materials, demanding them anew as an anti-faith, anti-messianic, anti-religious preacher.

She says with no hidden intention: this is life!

In this anti-ideal, upside-down idealistic act, she recalls the role of artists as people of spirit, people of choice—precisely in an act of voiding meanings and celebrating flesh, here and now.
